Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem declared the Trump administration is taking aggressive action against crime and illegal immigration, following a July 2025 attack on a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent in New York. She announced Operation Salvo, a joint federal and local effort that resulted in 54 arrests of violent transnational gang members linked to the Trinitarios, accused of weapons trafficking, human smuggling, narcotics distribution, and armed robbery. Over 60% of those arrested have been removed from the U.S. Noem blamed sanctuary city policies for enabling criminal activity and warned that anyone harming a U.S. citizen or law enforcement officer will be pursued, arrested, and prosecuted.
