Clemson University agrees to reinstate Dr. Joshua Bregy, rescind his termination, and provide benefits and recommendation letters, ending the lawsuit.
A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit filed by the ACLU-SC against Clemson University over the 2025 termination of Dr. Joshua Bregy, a former assistant professor, following a social media post about conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Under the agreement, Clemson will rescind Bregy’s termination, continue paying him and providing benefits through the end of his original term, and have Provost Robert H. Jones issue positive recommendation letters based on his teaching.
In return, Bregy will drop the lawsuit and resign effective May 15, 2026, without teaching or faculty duties through the spring.
The case was dismissed without costs and without prejudice, with the court retaining jurisdiction to enforce the settlement, which must be finalized within 60 days.
The university has not issued a public statement.
