BHEL began supplying traction converters for India’s Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, enabling 160 kmph operation with indigenous tech.
BHEL has started supplying underslung traction converters for India’s Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains, marking its entry into semi-high-speed propulsion. The first batch shipped from Bengaluru to Kolkata for assembly. The converters, mounted beneath train cars, improve interior space and payload. The system supports 160 kmph operation and 176 kmph design speed, using IGBT-based power conversion and advanced cooling. Traction motors and transformers were made in Bhopal and Jhansi. The project, part of a consortium with TRSL, follows a flag-off ceremony and underscores India’s push for indigenous rail technology.
