Bangladesh asked the U.S. to cut tariffs on apparel made with U.S. materials, and the U.S. agreed to review the request.
Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington, D.C., on January 8, 2026, proposing a reduction in the 20% reciprocal tariff on trade between the two nations.
He highlighted Bangladesh’s progress in increasing U.S. imports and implementing key trade agreement provisions ahead of formal rollout.
Rahman urged the U.S. to consider eliminating or reducing tariffs on apparel made with U.S. materials, while Greer agreed to review the request and commit to expediting resolution of outstanding issues.
Both sides also discussed facilitating business travel for Bangladeshis following the country’s inclusion in the U.S. visa waiver program and Bangladesh’s access to U.S. Development Finance Corporation funding, which Greer said he would support.
The meeting included Bangladesh’s U.S.
Ambassador Tareq Md Ariful Islam and other senior officials, with Rahman set to meet State Department leaders the following day.
