Australia implemented a new cash mandate on January 1, 2026, requiring supermarkets and petrol stations to accept cash for purchases under $500 between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m., with fines of up to $198,000 for noncompliance.
The rule applies to larger retailers with annual turnovers above $10 million and excludes smaller businesses, transactions over $500, and hours outside the 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. window.
While major chains like Target, Kmart, and David Jones continue to accept cash, many large sporting and entertainment venues remain cashless, though some offer debit card alternatives.
Consumers, particularly older Australians, have raised concerns about payment choice, privacy, and financial inclusion.
Cash remains available for bill payments via Australia Post’s Post Billpay service.
The mandate will be reviewed after three years.
