Arizona settles with dairy firm over groundwater use, requiring farmland retirement and funding for water access.
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has reached an $11 million settlement with Riverview LLP, a Minnesota-based dairy company operating in Cochise County, over excessive groundwater pumping.
The agreement requires Riverview to retire 2,000 acres of irrigated farmland over 12 years and establish two funds to support residents and schools affected by declining water levels.
The funds will help with well replacements, drilling, and water access infrastructure.
The settlement, a first-of-its-kind in the U.S., comes amid state inaction on rural groundwater protection and follows concerns over falling aquifer levels in the Willcox Basin.
Riverview acknowledged regional water challenges and committed to sustainability, while the state views the deal as a model for corporate accountability in water-stressed areas.
