Two Romanian men, aged 37 and 57, have been arrested in New South Wales after allegedly stealing about $50,000 from roughly 20 elderly women over five days by posing as helpful strangers in shopping centre car parks.
Police say the scam involved one man distracting victims by claiming there was a car issue, prompting them to open the bonnet while the other stole wallets, cash, and cards.
The incidents occurred across Sydney suburbs and regional cities including Goulburn, Newcastle, and Wagga Wagga, with victims mostly over 60.
The suspects were apprehended in Glenthorne near Taree, found with $6,000 in cash, passports, phones, a laptop, and transfer receipts.
They each face 72 charges including theft, fraud, and unlawful entry.
Authorities believe they were part of an international syndicate and are seeking two additional suspects described as Caucasian men in their mid-40s.
Both men are due in bail court.
