Twin mountain gorillas born in Congo boost endangered species recovery.
Twin male mountain gorillas were born to mother Mafuko in Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo, marking a rare event for the endangered species.
The healthy infants, part of the park’s largest gorilla group with 59 members, are being closely monitored amid ongoing threats from poaching and conflict.
Mafuko, who previously lost twins in 2016, has now had seven offspring.
The birth highlights progress in conservation efforts that have helped increase mountain gorilla numbers from around 400 in the 1980s to about 1,000 today, leading to their reclassification from “critically endangered” to “endangered.”
