A Sydney catamaran began ferry service in Newcastle on Jan. 8, 2026, to replace bus replacements during MV Shortland’s maintenance.
A 190-passenger catamaran from Sydney, operated by Captain Cook Cruises, began serving Newcastle’s Stockton to Newcastle ferry route on January 8, 2026, to maintain transit access during the MV Shortland’s planned maintenance.
The loaned vessel, part of a temporary partnership between Transport for NSW and Keolis Downer, helps replace bus replacements that have extended commutes since the MV Hunter was taken offline nearly a year ago.
Commuters welcomed the improvement, though many expressed concern over continued reliance on short-term fixes.
The ferry, delivered by SeaLink’s Nick Lester, may be recalled to Sydney if needed and has no fixed end date, but is expected to operate during Shortland outages.
Officials praised the integration as a step toward reliable public transport for the region.
