Supreme Court says Lok Sabha Speaker can form corruption inquiry into judge despite Rajya Sabha rejection.
The Supreme Court has indicated no legal barrier prevents the Lok Sabha Speaker from forming an inquiry committee into corruption allegations against Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma, even after the Rajya Sabha rejected a similar motion.
The court questioned whether procedural flaws in the committee’s formation invalidate the process, but stopped short of ruling.
The case centers on conflicting motions in both houses in July 2025, following the discovery of half-burnt cash at Varma’s residence.
The Lok Sabha argued the Rajya Sabha motion was defective and never admitted, making a joint committee unnecessary.
The Supreme Court is reviewing whether Varma was entitled to a joint committee under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, with no final decision yet issued.
