RCMP officer Mersad Mesbah faces dismissal over racist, sexist, and homophobic remarks in private chats, despite claiming rehabilitation.
RCMP Constable Mersad Mesbah of Coquitlam, B.C., faces potential dismissal or forced resignation after a conduct hearing found he made sexist, racist, and homophobic remarks in private group chats, including wishing harm on a woman and suggesting she be pepper-sprayed.
Suspended since 2021, Mesbah admitted to using the chats as an emotional outlet, expressed regret, and said he has since sought counseling and improved his behavior.
His lawyer urged lesser penalties, citing rehabilitation, while the RCMP’s conduct authority argued the conduct undermines public trust and violates core values.
A decision is expected soon, following a prior finding that Mesbah and two other officers engaged in discreditable conduct.
One officer has already resigned.
