Queensland’s ban on developer donations faces scrutiny, with warnings of corruption risks if lifted.
The Crime and Corruption Commission warns lifting Queensland’s ban on property developer donations could harm electoral integrity, citing risks of corruption and reduced transparency.
Seventy-seven submissions were received during a consultation on the Electoral Laws (Restoring Electoral Fairness) Amendment Bill, with the Australia Institute urging the ban’s retention to prevent undue influence, while the Property Council of Australia argued the industry should be treated like other sectors.
Other proposals, including stricter prisoner voting rules and ending compulsory preferential voting, were not adopted.
