The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette will cease operations on May 3, 2026, due to financial losses and a labor dispute.
On May 3, 2026, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette will cease publication due to Block Communications Inc.'s citation of more than $350 million in losses over two decades as unsustainable. The closure comes after an emergency appeal to overturn a labor board order mandating that the paper reinstate health care benefits from an expired union contract was denied by the Supreme Court. The company was found to have engaged in bad faith negotiations during the three-year strike that ended in November. A pre-recorded Zoom video was used to notify staff, and the paper's website will also be shut down. Founded in 1786, the Post-Gazette provided Pittsburgh with twice-weekly print editions and a daily online presence, but despite its lengthy history, it was unable to overcome labor and financial difficulties.
