Philly schools show progress with higher scores and enrollment, but face challenges with vacant buildings and funding for new initiatives.
The School District of Philadelphia reported improved academic performance in its January 8, 2026, State of Schools update, including rising enrollment, better test scores, higher attendance, and a declining dropout rate.
All 55 traditional high schools are now accredited for the first time in years, supported by $873 million in building upgrades.
However, the district faces challenges with about 20 vacant school buildings, some unused for decades, prompting calls for repurposing or demolition.
Mayor Cherelle Parker highlighted the need for innovative solutions, including converting sites to housing.
Superintendent Tony Watlington emphasized efficient use of assets, not closure, and the district is exploring new models, including two new public schools in North Philadelphia inspired by the Harlem Children’s Zone.
These district-run schools will offer extended learning and social services but details on funding and staffing remain pending.
