Over 57,000 Malaysians renounced their citizenship to move to Singapore between 2020 and December 2025, according to Malaysia’s National Registration Department, making up 93.8% of the 61,116 total who gave up citizenship during that period.
Most were women aged 21 to 40, driven by economic opportunities, higher incomes, employment prospects, and family reasons like marrying foreign spouses.
On average, about 10,000 Malaysians relinquish citizenship annually, with over 97,000 doing so between 2015 and June 2025.
