Federal jobs, which make up 5.3% of Maryland’s workforce—well above the national 1.8%—have long been vital to the state’s economy, with $150 billion in annual federal spending and $26.9 billion in wages.
Despite the losses, Maryland added 94,000 private-sector and state/local jobs, led by health care, and state officials are supporting displaced workers through job placement and financial aid.
