Maine Governor vetoes right-to-repair bill over data access, backs alternative proposal.
Maine Governor Janet Mills vetoed LD 1228, a right-to-repair bill, over a provision letting automakers control access to vehicle telemetric data, which she said undermines a 2023 voter-approved law and harms independent repair shops.
She urged passage of the working group’s recommendations via LD 292 instead.
Mills allowed 52 other bills to become law without her signature, including measures limiting law enforcement cooperation with ICE, requiring serial numbers on 3D-printed firearms, and creating a takeback program for toxic firefighting foam.
Seven bills were recalled for revision, and she is still reviewing a bill on internet gaming for the Wabanaki Nations.
The 52 laws will take effect 90 days after the next legislative session ends.
