On January 8, 2026, Australians from all backgrounds gathered at Bennelong Point, the Sydney Opera House site of the first recorded corroboree with non-Indigenous people, for Garabari, a contemporary dance performance by Wiradjuri choreographer Joel Bray.
The work, rooted in a traditional Dreaming story, tells of heroine Balana carving the Murrumbidgee River from a mountain to save land and creatures during a drought, symbolizing female empowerment and environmental stewardship.
Developed with elders and language speakers, the performance revives a lost cultural expression and invites participation, reflecting the 2026 Sydney Festival’s theme of building community through shared rituals.
The festival runs through January 25 and includes other events like a roller derby play, music from Tibetan-Australian artist Tenzin Choegyal, and a live film production in Walsh Bay.
