India’s Census 2027 will begin with a houselisting phase from April 1 to September 30, 2026, including a 15-day self-enumeration option, followed by population enumeration in February 2027, with remote areas surveyed in September 2026.
The digital census, the first fully electronic one, will use mobile apps, a real-time monitoring portal, and a web map tool, with caste data collected for the first time since independence.
A Rs 11,718 crore budget has been approved, and the exercise will involve 30 lakh field workers, generating 1.02 crore man-days of employment.
The reference date for the census is March 1, 2027.
