Hertfordshire County Council has unveiled its draft 2026/27 budget, proposing £1.2 billion in spending focused on social care and education.
Key investments include £21 million for adult care, rising to £62 million by 2028/29, £23 million for older adults and disabled adults, £16 million for children in care, £1.4 million for fostering allowances, and £6.3 million for special educational needs.
The council plans nearly 200 new 20 mph zones using £1.5 million and a £1.3 billion capital programme over four years, including £140 million for SEND school places and £377 million for roads.
Council leader Steve Jarvis called the budget ambitious and affordable, citing financial pressures from a new government funding formula and the need for tough choices to balance it.
