Erie County Democrats picked Jeremy Zellner to fill the vacant State Senate seat left by Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan.
Erie County Democrats nominated Jeremy Zellner, current county legislator and Democratic Committee Chair, to run in the February 3 special election for New York’s State Senate 61st District, vacated by Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan.
Zellner, who resigned from his role as a Democratic Commissioner on the Erie County Board of Elections shortly after the special election was called, plans to remain as party chairman.
His nomination by the county committee, rather than through a public primary, has sparked criticism from some Democrats, including State Assemblymember Jon Rivera and activist India Walton, who question the process, raise concerns about conflicts of interest, and highlight the appearance of impropriety given Zellner’s recent oversight role in elections.
Zellner will face Republican businessman Dan Gagliardo in the special election, with early voting beginning January 24.
