A Canadian lawyer got a suspended sentence for painting "FEED ME" on the National Holocaust Monument, sparking backlash from Jewish groups who called it too lenient.
Iain Aspenlieder, a former Ottawa lawyer, received a suspended sentence and two years of probation for defacing Canada’s National Holocaust Monument in June 2025 by painting “FEED ME” in red on its surface.
He had already served 152 days in custody and was barred from possessing weapons or visiting Jewish institutions.
The judge ruled the act was not hate-motivated, citing insufficient evidence, though acknowledging the harm caused.
Jewish groups condemned the sentence as too lenient, especially ahead of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, warning it undermines protections for sacred sites and democratic values.
