Afghanistan secured 1,250 MW of new power projects in 2025 to cut reliance on imported electricity.
Afghanistan’s state power company has signed contracts for 1,250 megawatts of new domestic electricity generation in 2025, including projects using coal, wind, hydropower, natural gas, and solar energy across multiple provinces.
The moves, part of efforts to reduce reliance on imported power, follow the opening of a 22.75-MW solar plant and a new 34-MW solar project in Kabul.
Currently, Afghanistan generates about 600 MW domestically, meeting roughly 30% of demand, with the rest imported from neighboring countries.
