Tennessee to pilot body cameras for prison guards amid accountability concerns.
Tennessee lawmakers are advancing a pilot program to equip correctional officers at Trousdale Turner Correctional Center with body cameras, following federal scrutiny over staffing shortages, abuse, and violence.
The proposal, supported by the prison’s operator CoreCivic, which would cover $350,000 in initial costs, aims to deter misconduct and improve accountability.
However, the state’s Department of Corrections raised concerns over high annual costs—$2–3 million—for storing and reviewing footage, citing legal and logistical challenges.
All four subcommittee senators expressed backing for the pilot as the new legislative session begins, though no vote was taken.
