Nigerian man arrested at Lagos airport for scamming U.S. victims out of over $1 million via fake UN surgeon identity and cryptocurrency.
Nigerian authorities arrested 20-year-old Essien Emmanuel Akpama at Lagos airport on January 5, 2026, for allegedly running an international fraud scheme that defrauded U.S. victims of over $1 million.
He is accused of posing as a UN-affiliated surgeon and using a cryptocurrency platform called “BullRun 2.0” to scam a woman out of $1 million for a fake Florida orphanage property purchase, and another victim of $18,000 through fake purchases of electronics and gift cards shipped to Nigeria.
The arrest followed months of surveillance, and seized items include high-end devices valued at over N8 million.
The case has been referred to the Special Fraud Unit for prosecution.
