flag A nearly complete Iron Age war trumpet, or carnyx, was found in Norfolk, along with rare artifacts, offering new insights into Celtic warfare and Roman-era Britain.

A near-complete Iron Age battle trumpet, or carnyx, has been discovered in west Norfolk among a hoard of rare artifacts during a routine 2025 excavation on private land. The find, one of only three known carnyxes from Britain and among the most complete ever found in Europe, includes a bronze boar’s head, five shield bosses, and an unidentified iron object. The fragile items were carefully removed in a soil block for scanning and conservation. A coroner will determine the hoard’s legal status in early 2026, influencing future research and housing. Experts say the discovery offers major insights into Iron Age culture and warfare, with the find linked to Celtic tribes and Roman history. It will be featured in an upcoming episode of BBC Two’s Digging For Britain, airing January 14.
