At least 22 Ethiopian migrants died and 65 were injured Tuesday in a lorry crash in Ethiopia’s Afar region, near Semera, along a major migration route to the Gulf.
The vehicle, carrying about 85 migrants, overturned at dawn.
Authorities said the migrants were misled by illegal brokers and unaware of the journey’s dangers.
Many were attempting to cross the Red Sea from Djibouti to Yemen for work in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states.
Thirty of the injured remain in critical condition.
The International Organization for Migration reported over 60,000 migrants arrived in Yemen in 2024, with the route among the most dangerous and heavily used globally.
