Kano’s governor faces calls to resign over a potential party switch, but former leaders defend the move as politically normal.
Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau defended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf against calls to step down if he defects from the NNPP to the APC, citing Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso’s own past defection while retaining office as a precedent.
Shekarau highlighted internal NNPP disputes over power-sharing after the 2023 party switch, which led to his exit, and argued political realignments should be judged contextually, not as betrayal.
Meanwhile, former APC leader Abdullahi Umar Ganduje welcomed Yusuf’s reported move to the APC, calling it courageous and aligned with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
A court also reversed the dissolution of the NNPP’s Kano executive committee, upholding Yusuf’s loyalist as chair.
