Dr. Justin Benavidez named USDA Chief Economist amid staff turnover and rising food insecurity.
Dr. Justin Benavidez has been appointed U.S. Department of Agriculture Chief Economist, succeeding Dr. Seth Meyer, who is retiring after leading the agency’s economic forecasting since 2021.
Benavidez, a former House Agriculture Committee Chief Economist and Texas A&M professor, brings expertise in farm economics and policy.
His appointment comes amid significant USDA staff turnover, with about 22% of the Office of the Chief Economist’s team leaving in the past year.
The USDA also reported that U.S. food insecurity rose to 13.7% in 2024, the highest since 2014, while corn exports remain strong due to demand from China.
