Delhi demolished encroachments near a mosque on Jan. 7, 2026, sparking clashes and a pending court challenge.
Delhi’s Municipal Corporation, acting under a High Court order, began a pre-dawn demolition near the Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque in Turkman Gate, removing alleged encroachments, including a banquet hall and dispensary, on 36,000 square feet of land.
Clashes erupted as protesters, including local residents, threw stones at police, injuring at least five officers.
Police used tear gas and lathi charges to restore order, detained ten people, and filed an FIR.
The operation proceeded despite a pending petition by the mosque’s managing committee, which challenged the demolition.
Authorities said the drive was lawful and coordinated with local groups, and no major injuries were reported.
A High Court hearing is scheduled for April 22.
