Bayer’s Monsanto unit sued major vaccine makers over alleged use of its mRNA patents in COVID-19 vaccines.
Bayer’s Monsanto unit has sued Pfizer, BioNTech, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson over alleged patent infringement related to mRNA technology used in COVID-19 vaccines.
The lawsuits claim the companies used Monsanto’s 1980s-developed mRNA stabilization methods, originally for agricultural crops, in their vaccine platforms without authorization.
Bayer, which did not produce any vaccines, seeks unspecified damages but not an injunction to stop production.
Moderna said it will defend itself; the others did not comment.
The legal actions add to ongoing disputes over vaccine patents, as sales of the vaccines have declined since their pandemic peak.
