Alabama proposes making all driver’s license tests English-only, banning translators and devices.
Alabama lawmaker Rep. Phillip Pettus (R-Killen) has prefiled House Bill 88 to require all driver’s license exams—written, oral, vision, and behind-the-wheel tests—to be conducted exclusively in English, banning translation tools, electronic devices, and interpreters.
Currently, the written test is available in 11 languages, but the driving test and communication with examiners are already in English.
Pettus, a retired state trooper, says English proficiency ensures drivers can effectively communicate with law enforcement.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has not commented on the bill, which remains under consideration.
