On-duty law enforcement officer deaths in the U.S. dropped by nearly 25% in 2025, falling from 148 in 2024 to 111, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
The decline occurred across all categories, including a 15% drop in firearm-related deaths to 44—the lowest in at least a decade—and a 23% decrease in traffic-related fatalities, attributed to expanded "move-over" laws and safer traffic stop procedures.
The report noted no on-duty fatalities in 17 states or Washington, D.C., and none at federal or tribal agencies.
While the number of officers shot increased slightly, fewer shootings resulted in death.
The report no longer includes COVID-19 or suicide deaths in its on-duty fatality count.
