Scientists discover new reed snake species in Mizoram, India, using DNA analysis.
Scientists from Mizoram University and international collaborators have identified a new reed snake species, Calamaria mizoramensis, in northeastern India, correcting a decades-old misclassification.
Found in forested areas around Aizawl and nearby districts, the snake was distinguished through DNA analysis showing over 15% genetic divergence from related species.
It is nocturnal, lives in humid hill forests, and is currently known only in Mizoram, though its range may extend to nearby regions.
The discovery brings Mizoram’s known reptile species to 117 and has been classified as "Least Concern" by the IUCN.
