A parliamentary committee began hearings on a 2025 bill that would automatically remove Indian ministers detained for 30+ days on serious charges.
The Joint Parliamentary Committee on the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill, chaired by BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi, held its third meeting on January 6, 2026, with the next session scheduled for January 7.
The committee, made up of 31 members from both houses of Parliament, began comprehensive hearings after an initial collaborative session.
It has invited legal experts and representatives from NALSAR Hyderabad, National Law University Delhi, and the Law Commission of India to provide input.
The bill, introduced in 2025, seeks to automatically vacate the office of a Prime Minister, Chief Minister, or minister detained for 30 consecutive days on charges punishable by five or more years in prison, with the position becoming vacant after 31 days unless the individual resigns.
The position may be reinstated after release.
The committee’s work will continue through the Budget Session, with a final report expected after consultations.
