NASA's Hubble Space Telescope confirmed Cloud-9, a massive, starless gas cloud rich in dark matter, as a primordial "failed galaxy" near Messier 94.
NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has identified Cloud-9, a starless, gas-rich cloud about 4,900 light-years across with a mass of roughly one million solar masses in gas and an estimated total mass of five billion solar masses, indicating it is dominated by dark matter.
Discovered via radio surveys by China’s FAST telescope and confirmed by U.S. observatories, Cloud-9 is a compact, spherical structure near galaxy Messier 94, believed to be a primordial “failed galaxy” that never formed stars due to insufficient gas.
Scientists classify it as a Reionization-Limited H I Cloud (RELHIC), a rare relic from the early universe offering new insights into dark matter and galaxy formation.
