Malawi’s rutile discovery at Mkanda Project, with high grades and vast mineralisation, signals potential to become a global mining hub, supported by international financing and upcoming feasibility studies.
A major rutile discovery at Fortuna Metals’ Mkanda Project in Malawi, with grades up to 2.21% and widespread mineralisation, suggests the country could become a global mining hub, especially near Sovereign Metals’ Kasiya Project, which holds what may be the world’s largest rutile deposit.
Fortuna’s drilling across 180 sq km shows 90% of holes exceeded 0.5% grade, and deeper drilling is planned for 2026.
The broader 70-km mineralised corridor spans 658 sq km, with graphite also gaining interest.
Sovereign Metals secured a 36-month financing and technical support deal with the IFC, which will help fund a feasibility study and environmental assessment, with the project’s DFS due in Q1 2026.
While international backing signals confidence, experts warn Malawi risks missing out on long-term economic benefits unless it secures stronger governance, value-added processing, and fair terms, as the government has no direct financial stake and may only receive limited royalties.
El descubrimiento de rutilo de Malawi en el Proyecto Mkanda, con altos grados y gran mineralización, señala el potencial de convertirse en un centro minero mundial, respaldado por financiación internacional y próximos estudios de viabilidad.
