Thanks to a curling goal from Mohamed Salah in the 124th minute, Egypt defeated Benin 3-1 in extra time to advance to the AFCON 2025 quarterfinals. Jodel Dossou of Benin equalized the score in the 83rd minute after Marwan Attia had opened the score in the 69th. Early in extra time, Yasser Ibrahim gave Egypt the lead again, and Salah's third goal of the competition sealed the victory. Benin's hopes of making it to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2019 were dashed when Egypt's weakened team defeated their tenacious defense in the Agadir match. In the following round, Egypt will play the victor of Ivory Coast vs. Burkina Faso.
