Construction has begun on flood resilience upgrades for Ōhiti Road in Ōmāhu, Hawke’s Bay, as part of a $212 million national initiative to improve flood protection following Cyclone Gabrielle.
The project, managed by the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and funded through the North Island Weather Events programme, includes building 2.1 kilometres of stopbanks and bunds along the Ohiwia Stream, raising Ōhiti and Taihape Roads to match flood protection levels, and implementing temporary single-lane traffic controls.
The work, awarded to local contractor CHB Earthmovers, aims to reclassify affected properties into lower flood risk zones, enhancing community safety and confidence.
Early stream works were completed in 2025, with full construction expected by mid-2026.
