Alberta’s premier links U.S. capture of Maduro to urgency for oil pipeline expansion amid falling energy shares and market concerns.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says the U.S. capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro underscores the need to accelerate oil pipeline development, particularly a proposed West Coast pipeline to access Asian markets.
She cited a November 2025 agreement with Prime Minister Mark Carney to advance an Indigenous co-owned bitumen pipeline, remove environmental barriers like B.C.’s tanker ban, and meet deadlines for a federal carbon price by April 1 and a pipeline proposal submission by July 1.
Smith emphasized Alberta’s support for pipelines in all directions and urged swift federal action.
The remarks follow a drop in Canadian energy shares, with the TSX energy subindex falling over three percent on January 5, 2026, amid concerns over increased Venezuelan oil exports threatening Canada’s market position.
El primer ministro de Alberta vincula la captura de Maduro por parte de EE.UU. con la urgencia de la expansión del oleoducto en medio de la caída de las acciones energéticas y las preocupaciones del mercado.
