Zimbabwe’s roads have become deadly, with crashes every 15 minutes and 5 deaths daily due to deteriorated infrastructure and reckless driving.
Because of the dangerously deteriorating roads in Zimbabwe, where crashes happen every fifteen minutes and five people die every day, driving instruction has changed from exam preparation to survival training. Since the 2000s, infrastructure and enforcement have been undermined by economic decline, resulting in chaotic traffic characterized by careless driving, crowded cars, and a general disdain for the law. 94% of crashes are attributed to human error, and instructors now teach students how to navigate unpredictable conditions. The nation's fatality rate—nearly 30 deaths per 100,000 people—is among the highest in Africa, reflecting a larger regional crisis where road deaths are increasing more quickly than anywhere else due to factors like rapid urbanization, lax regulations, and an increase in used cars and two- and three-wheelers. Half of all fatalities are caused by motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians.
