West Cork Distillers lost approval for four new whiskey warehouses due to fire safety and environmental concerns.
West Cork Distillers has been denied retrospective planning permission for four bonded warehouses near Nohoval, following An Coimisiún Pleanála’s rejection of Cork County Council’s earlier approval.
The decision, based on fire safety and environmental concerns, cited the site’s remote location, delayed emergency response times, and insufficient plans for managing fire-related spills or runoff.
A local resident appealed the council’s approval, raising safety and traffic issues.
Despite the company’s claims that all safety regulations would be met and that spillage would be contained in a retention tank, the Commission found the safeguards inadequate.
The outcome threatens the expansion plans for the whiskey producer, which reported a €3.4 million profit in 2025 and continues to grow its operations.
