A UK Salvation Army worker was lawfully fired in 2024 for racist remarks about refugees, an employment tribunal ruled in 2025.
A Salvation Army worker in Dundee, Charles Markie, was lawfully dismissed in 2024 after making offensive remarks about refugees during a workplace discussion, an employment tribunal ruled in December 2025. The 56-year-old, who had nearly 20 years of service, said refugees should be sent back on a "f****** boat" and claimed a housing shortage resulted from accepting 150 refugees, including a Syrian man using the hostel. Colleagues found the comments racist and deeply insensitive, especially given his role supporting vulnerable people. Though Markie denied intending harm, claimed he wasn’t racist, and said his remarks were personal opinions, the tribunal found his statements undermined trust and constituted gross misconduct. His claims of unfair dismissal and discrimination were rejected, with the judge ruling the dismissal was justified and proportionate.
