Russia shipped record sanctioned LNG to China in 2025, bypassing Western sanctions via Arctic routes.
Russia exported sanctioned liquefied natural gas (LNG) to China in 2025, delivering 22 cargoes—21 from the Arctic LNG 2 project and one from the Portovaya plant—via the ice-class tanker Christophe De Margerie to China’s Beihai LNG terminal.
Despite harsh Arctic weather and international sanctions from the U.S., EU, and UK, shipments reached a record 1.6 million tons in November 2025, making Russia China’s second-largest LNG supplier after Qatar.
The Beihai terminal has become a key hub for sanctioned Russian LNG, with Chinese state firms CNPC and CNOOC each holding a 10% stake in Arctic LNG 2.
No official comment was issued by Chinese authorities during a national holiday.
