Over 33 million people joined the 2025 Holy Year, a record, concluding Jan. 5, 2026, under Pope Leo XIV.
Over 33 million people took part in the 2025 Holy Year, a record for a single year, according to the Vatican. The event started under Pope Francis and ended on January 5, 2026, under Pope Leo XIV. Based on surveillance, volunteer data, and registrations, the number comprises pilgrims from 185 countries, with the United States, Spain, and Italy having the highest representation. Nearly 3,200 construction projects in Rome, including infrastructure improvements and the completion of a new pedestrian plaza with contentious modern fountains, were spurred by the jubilee, the first in more than 300 years to span two papacies. These projects were financed by 3.7 billion euros. The next Holy Year, which honors the customary year of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection, is scheduled for 2033.
