Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has urged President John Dramani Mahama to proceed cautiously with proposed constitutional changes, warning against rushing reforms that could undermine democracy.
Speaking on January 5, 2026, he highlighted concerns over the Prof H.K.P.
Committee’s recommendation to extend the presidential term from four to five years and remove the entrenched status of Article 66(1), which currently requires a national referendum for change.
The proposed shift would allow Parliament to amend the provision with a two-thirds majority, eliminating the need for public approval.
Awuah stressed the importance of broad consultation, a white paper, and public involvement, cautioning that unchecked changes could enable political self-preservation and threaten democratic safeguards.
