The tiger census in Karnataka began on January 5, 2026, as part of India’s nationwide four-yearly assessment, covering major reserves like Nagarahole, Bandipur, and Bhadra.
Officials started field surveys across 38 forest divisions, collecting data on tigers, leopards, elephants, and prey species to assess population trends and ecosystem health.
The second phase will evaluate herbivore numbers to determine carrying capacity.
This marks the sixth census since 2006, with Karnataka previously reporting about 563 tigers in 2022, ranking second in the country.
