India and the EU hold final talks in Brussels to finalize a long-delayed trade deal amid complex issues like carbon taxes and market access.
Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is visiting Brussels January 8-9 for final talks on a long-delayed India-EU Free Trade Agreement, following a stop in Liechtenstein.
The negotiations, resumed in 2022 after an eight-year pause, have reached their most complex stage, addressing issues like the EU’s carbon border tax, market access for automobiles and food, and intellectual property.
Bilateral trade in goods hit $136.53 billion in 2024–25, making the EU India’s top goods trading partner.
Both sides aim to finalize a deal covering 23 chapters, including sustainable development and dispute resolution, to boost exports of Indian textiles, pharmaceuticals, and steel while meeting EU demands for tariff cuts and stronger protections.
