A gas leak and fire at an Indian oil well on Jan. 5, 2026, caused by a blowout during repairs, led to evacuations and tree damage but no injuries.
On January 5, 2026, while contractor Deep Industries Ltd. was performing repairs at the ONGC-operated Mori-5 well in Irusumanda village, Andhra Pradesh, a gas leak and ensuing fire broke out. About 500 coconut trees were destroyed and nearby residents were evacuated as a result of the incident, which was caused by a blowout that released gas mixed with crude oil and caused flames and heavy smoke. There were no reported fatalities or injuries. In a swift response, ONGC, fire, and police teams cordoned off the area, started cooling operations, and sent out crisis management and international well-control specialists. The site is still being closely watched, and the cause is being investigated.
