EPA proposes perchlorate limit in drinking water due to court order, not urgent health risk.
The Environmental Protection Agency will propose a drinking water limit for perchlorate, a chemical linked to thyroid harm in children, but says the move is required by a court order rather than a clear public health need.
The agency estimates fewer than 0.1% of water systems would exceed proposed limits of 20 to 80 parts per billion and argues the regulatory burden would outweigh benefits for most systems.
Despite a 2011 finding that perchlorate posed a health risk and years of delays, including a 2020 reversal based on new data, a federal appeals court ruled the EPA must act.
The agency will now seek public input on the proposed standard and monitoring requirements.
